Optical interconnects have steadily been moving closer and closer to providing chip-to-chip communication. The advantage over conventional electronic channels is, first and foremost, ultrahigh speed—30 Gbytes/second to 60 Gbytes/s are possible. In this session, the leaders of two of the top companies in this space, Avicena and Ayar Labs, will describe their approaches to this challenge, which will have to be surmounted to exploit the full capabilities of future ultrafast processors.
